LANGUAGE ARTS VISION STATEMENT

Language Arts provides students with the skills to be able to function as Christian citizens in society. Language Arts gives students the communication skills to be able to communicate with others in society. These skills are taught through reading, spelling, speaking, listening, and writing, by using these skills all students will have the ability to go out in society and become functioning citizens in personal and career related situations.

LANGUAGE ARTS PROGRAM STANDARDS

I. GRAMMAR USAGE AND MECHANICS

• The students will be able to identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, synonyms, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
• The students will be able to use proper grammar and mechanics in English.

II. BOOK AWARENESS

• The students will be able to know the proper handling of a book.
• The students will be able to distinguish between pictures and words.

III. PRINT AND WORD AWARENESS

• The students will be able to learn that printed letters form words.
• The students will be able to use study skills to read and comprehend.
• The students will be able to use reference books.

IV. UNDERSTANDING STORY ELEMENTS

• The students will be able to list and know the meaning of the elements of a story.

V. COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES AND SKILLS

• The students will be able to use strategy skills to learn to comprehend and understand written material.

VI. PHONICS

• The students will be able to use phonics to learn to read and figure out information words.

VII. ENGLISH

• The students will be able to know the parts of the sentence.
• The students will be able to know the different types of sentences.
• The students will be able to use nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, and verbs properly.
• The students will be able to use capitalization and punctuation in a sentence.
• The students will be able to write in many different forms.

VIII. SPELLING

• The students will be able to use the many different sounds and word formations for spelling words correctly.
