MATHEMATICS VISION STATEMENT

Mathematics reflects the beauty, order and unity in God’s universe and deals with truth; therefore; it plays on integral role in the Catholic school, home and community. Mathematics is a practical tool that is used daily therefore it is important for every student to have the basic knowledge of math. By giving students the basic knowledge and skills of math, the students will become better problem solvers and be able to reason logically.

MATHEMATICS PROGRAM STANDARDS

I. PATTERNS AND CLASSIFACTATIONS

  • The students will be able to sort and classify object by common attributes.
  • The students will be able to start and finish a pattern.
  • The students will be able to determine likes and differences between objects
    and groups of objects.

II. NUMBERS AND NUMBER SENSES

  • The students will be able to recognize and count by many different formats. (2’s, 5’s, 10’s, etc.)
  • The students will be able to learn that numbers have many uses such as counting, measuring, etc.
  • The students will be able to explore that numbers have many relationships such as more, less, large, and small numbers.

III. RATIO AND PERCENT

  • The students will explore ratios and different uses for ratios.
  • The students will develop the skills to understand and know what percents are used for in everyday life.

IV. FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS

  • The students will be able to explore fractions and decimals and their various uses in life.
  • The students will be able to perform computation with decimals and fractions.

V. MONEY

  • The students will be able to recognize different types of money and be able to
    count money.
  • The students will be able to recognize the signs that go with money. ($,.)
  • The students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide problems with money.

VI. COMPUTATION (ADD, SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY, DIVIDE)

  • The students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers.
  • The students will be able to learn what the operation signs stand for +,-,x,/.
  • The students will be able to solve simple and complex problems using the
    necessary steps.

VII. MEASUREMENT

  • The students will be able to use different types of measuring instruments.
  • The students will be able to read both customary systems and metric systems.
  • The students will be able to weigh objects using mass and volume.
  • The students will be able to read a thermometer and record degrees in Celsius
    and Fahrenheit.
  • The students will be able to read a calendar and know the months of the year
    and the days of the week.

VIII. GEOMETRY

  • The students will be able to know the basic information about geometric
    shapes and designs.
  • The students will be able to know how to figure radius, circumference and
    angles in straight edge shapes.
  • The students will be able to know the formulas for volume, mass and area for
    each shape.

IX. PROBABILTY AND STATISTICS

  • The students will be able to find the mean, medium, range, and mode.
  • The students will be able to use origin, x-axis, and y-axis.
  • The students will be able to graphing of simple functions and read data in
    graphic form.

X. PRE-ALGEBRA

  • The students will be able to recognize variables and solve basic equations.
  • The students will be able to write and solve word problems.
