The History of Sacred
Heart School
On September 3, 1929 one-hundred
thirty students centered the newly completed Sacred Heart School.
Eighteen of them were in their first year of high school. The
succeeding three years of high school were added annually, one by one
until all four were offered.
The fund and plan for this school was
started when Rev. Fr. Joseph F. Hallissey was pastor. When his
successor Rev. Fr. Wm. J. Hayden came in 1922 the plans continued as
the need for school was evident and the pastor’s aim was high.
In 1923 the property directly across
from the church was purchased for $4,000 and additional property was
purchased in 1924 for $2,240. There were houses occupying both these
properties and they were removed in 1926. Improvements were made on the
property and the land was prepared for the laying of the corner stone
of the school which was laid by Father Hayden surrounded by
parishioners. Planning and supervising the construction of the school
was his main interest, and interest that continued even after the last
brick had been put in place.
Looking back on the past 75 years
certainly brings a great feeling of community and collaboration. Just
as it took the support of the entire parish family to build the
foundation of the school, it continues to make great strides for the
students we serve due to the dedicated staff team and their ministry to
teach and educate children today. It continues to take the parents and
the entire parish family to support, maintain and build on the faith
based education that our children are so blessed to receive and high
academic standards in an atmosphere surrounded by God’s love.
Incredible things have continued to
happen with the collaborative effort of so many people. With the
continual passing on of faith and God’s love, Sacred Heart School is
truly a “Place where Faith and Knowledge Meet”. The students get strong
basics in each core curriculum area but they also get the added touch
of sweetness in life, the faith based education. The sweetness is the
formation of the person, the values, the love, forgiveness, honesty and
kindness. In each curriculum area we help the students see the world as
God does and to see others as God does.
Over the years Sacred Heart School has
continually upgraded all curriculum areas to assure that students are
receiving the best education possible. The school has taken the
opportunity to add on with an outdoor habitat which is used in all
subject areas for hands on learning. The addition of a new state of the
art technology lab is allowing students the opportunity to prepare for
the future.
Sacred Heart School is what it is
today because of what has been passed on from generation to generation.
Over the years the school continues to grow and develop for every child
in the future. With the passing on of traditions Sacred Heart School is
truly rich and a “Place where Faith and Knowledge Meet”.
